Acoustic Cellos
Acoustic Cellos are traditional wooden style cellos and are the most common type of the instrument. These cellos emit that deep, beautiful sound that you’d expect from a cello.
These cellos are not electric and cannot be hooked up to any amps. If you are at an orchestra or listening to a string quartet, then this is the type of cello you will likely hear.
Carbon Fiber Cellos
As the name suggests, these are modern cellos made with a carbon fiber body making them incredibly lightweight compared to their wooden counterparts.
Most of these are produced by a single company that goes by the name Luis & Clark. They are the same size as an acoustic cello, but they lack any cornices (indentations on the sides of the instrument).
Typically carbon fiber cellos produce a deeper and richer sound than wooden cellos.
Electric Cellos
Just like an electric guitar, the electric cello has a pickup that can be plugged into an amp to amplify the sound, making these the loudest cellos.
Most musicians agree that if you want to learn how to play the electric cello, you should first learn on the classical instrument.
