Baroque
This is the original violin first created in the 16th century. The Baroque violin has a lower string tension when compared to the classical violin, and often uses the most intricate and advanced craftsmanship.
The neck on this type of violin generally has a more shallow angle and is much thicker, which gives the string tension a bit more support.
Classical
First created in the late 18th century, the classical violin was developed by increasing the tension on the strings to that the overall sound would project further from the instrument.
This violin has a much slimmer neck with much higher string tension than other types of violin.
In recent years, Classical Violins have been built using different types of woods, as well as better strings and rosins than their original counterparts.
Stroh
Also known as the “violinophone” or “horn violin”, the stroh was first designed in the 19th century by John Stroh.
The use of a horn instead of a soundbox means that this violin can produce a much louder and more sharp and sometimes harsh sound.
The stroh violin isn’t as popular as many other styles of violin, mainly due to the often high price tag and the tinnier sound that many listeners and musicians aren’t used to.
Electric
First developed in the late 1930’s, the electric violin, like the electric guitar, produces its sound electronically.
There is no need for any f-holes or a soundbox on electric violins and they produce beautiful sound without having to have the intricate craftsmanship and aesthetics of a more classical style violin.
Semi-Electric
Semi-electric violins are a hybrid of electric and acoustic violins. Similar to an acoustic electric guitar, they produce sound acoustically, but they are also fitted with an electric pick-up so that the musician can amplify the sound to the desired level.
You can actually add pick-ups to normal classical violins, but because some set-ups require modifications of the body of the violin itself, it’s often better to purchase semi-electric violins that are made by the luthier rather than trying to do it yourself.
