Soprano
The Soprano Ukulele is the most well-known and popular of the ukuleles. The Soprano sound is the epitome of what most people think of when they thing of Ukulele music.
In Hawaii, they call this ukulele the “Standard Size” because it’s almost exactly the same size as the instrument was when it was first invented.
The Soprano is the smallest ukulele body type and is therefore one of the easier instruments to play.
Tenor
The Tenor ukulele is one of the largest of the bunch. Measuring longer and wider than both the soprano and concert ukuleles, the Tenor has a more round, deeper and warmer sound, bringing it (and its size) closer to the acoustic guitar.
Still made with nylon strings, the Tenor Ukulele often has a low G and a high G which you don’t find on the smaller ukuleles.
Baritone
This ukulele is even larger than the tenor guitar, making it the closest size to an actual guitar.
The baritone definitely isn’t the best uke for beginners to start out with, but many people like the deep, warm sound that lacks the typical “ukulele twang”.
Because the frets are so large, this uke plays more like a guitar overall.
Specialty
There are plenty of custom-built, specialty ukuleles, but when we use the word “specialty” with the instrument, we’re generally talking about a hybrid instrument.
These include the Banjolele which is tuned like a uke but has a banjo body and a banjo sound, as well as Guitarleles which are tuned like a guitar, but sound a bit more like a ukulele.
Electric
An electric ukulele can be plugged into an amp so that you can take your ukulele sound to the next level, reverb it or play at gigs.
Electric ukuleles are a growing craze that help make an already fun instrument even more exciting to play and listen to.
Bass
Bass ukulele a mini acoustic bass guitar. The strings are fat nylon and the warm, deep tone of this uke is dreamy and charming.
Bass ukuleles are hard to come by and are slightly more expensive than standard ukes due to the construction and strings.
Concert
One up from the soprano, is the concert size. The concert ukulele is around an inch longer than a soprano, and the neck slightly wider.
It’s also a bit heavier. That added length allows for more frets, with wider spacing between them.
Acoustic Electric
An acoustic-electric ukulele combines the traditional hollow body and shape of the ukulele with an electronic pickup that can be plugged into electric amplifiers, or to be recorded directly.
It has the magnet pickup system that absorbs the vibrations the strings produce, which are transferred to the amp.
